God is the greatest giver. He gave His Son, Jesus, for our salvation. Gospel Shaped Home Questions

As Pastor Eric teaches on The Gospel-Shaped Home, the sermons will not cover every situation and topic. So, if you have a question that you’d like Pastor Eric and his wife Heather to answer, please send it in. Each week, they will answer a few of the top questions in a short video shared on social media and through email. It’s a great way to stay connected and lean in a little more to what we’re learning together.

BELONG

At Lakeview, we believe this isn't just a church you attend, it’s a family you're part of. Belong is where you move from attending to engaging; from participating to belonging. It’s designed to help you understand who we are, what we believe, and how you can be part of what God is doing here. From being rooted in community, serving alongside others, to becoming a member of the Lakeview family, Belong is here to help you find your place. We can’t wait to spend time with you at Belong.

SERMON NOTES

Title: The Gospel-Shaped Family
Passage: Genesis 1:28; 2:24; Colossians 3:12-21

Points:

  • The gospel-shaped family is God’s idea, so he gets to direct it. (Genesis 1:28; 2:24).
  • The gospel-shaped family is the cultivator of godly virtue. (Colossians 3:12-15)
  • The gospel-shaped family is the training ground of godly practice. (Colossians 3:16-17)

SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

Title: The Gospel-Shaped Family
Passage: Genesis 1:28; 2:24; Colossians 3:12-21

1. God’s Design & Authority

Read Genesis 2:24 and 1:28.

  • What do these passages reveal about God’s purpose for marriage and family?
  • In what ways do people today tend to look to culture instead of God for direction in family life?
  • Where are you most tempted to follow culture instead of God in your family decisions?

2. The Reality of Imperfect Families

  • The sermon emphasized that there is no such thing as a “problem-free” family.
  • How can believing the lie that “everyone else’s family is better” affect your relationships?
  • How can you respond differently the next time conflict or difficulty arises in your home?

3. Leaving and Cleaving

  • Reflect on the idea of “leaving and holding fast.”
  • What are some practical ways couples fail to “leave” their family of origin?
  • Why are healthy boundaries important for a new family unit?
  • Is there a boundary (emotional, relational, or practical) that needs to be adjusted in your family?

4. Cultivating Gospel Character at Home

Read Colossians 3:12–15.

  • Which of these virtues (compassion, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness, love, etc.) is hardest to live out in your home—and why?
  • Why do you think the home is such a powerful place for growing these qualities?
  • Pick one virtue from this passage. What is one intentional way you can practice it this week in your family?

5. Moving Beyond “Say Sorry.”

  • The sermon gave the example of teaching kids to ask for and extend forgiveness.
  • What is the difference between saying “I’m sorry” and truly asking for forgiveness?
  • How does the gospel (Christ forgiving us) shape the way we forgive others?

6. Practicing Faith in the Home

Read Colossians 3:16–17.

  • What does it look like for the “word of Christ to dwell richly” in a family?
  • What is one simple step you can take this week to put God more at the center of your home (e.g., praying together, reading Scripture, expressing gratitude)?
